Wind Energy: How Blades Save the Planet

Wind turbines are not just romantic windmills. Today, they are high-tech generators. Blades up to 100 meters long, the height of the tower is 150 meters. One turbine with a power of 2 MW can supply electricity to 1500 homes. In 2025, global wind energy produced 6% of all electricity (50% in Denmark, 25% in Germany). Wind does not emit CO2, does not require water, does not create radioactive waste. Problems: noise, bird killing (rarely), blade disposal (composite materials are not yet recyclable).

The History of Windmills: From Mills to Giants

The first windmills appeared in Persia (7th century) — they ground grain. In Europe — in the 12th century. The Dutch drained swamps with their help. In the 19th century, windmills pumped water on farms. The first wind power plant was built in 1891 in Denmark. Boom: after the oil crisis of the 1970s, interest grew. Modern giants (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, General Electric) are building offshore wind turbines at sea, where the wind is stronger and more consistent.

How the Wind Blows from a Scientific Point of View

Wind is the movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. The greater the pressure difference, the stronger the wind. Trades, monsoons, breezes, fens. Wind speed is measured in meters per second (m/s) or Beaufort scale points (0-12). The strongest wind on Earth is in Antarctica (up to 100 m/s). Our planet is covered with winds that carry heat and moisture, forming the climate.

Wind Energy in Russia

Russia is a country with a huge wind potential (steppes, coasts), but wind energy is underdeveloped. The first industrial wind farm with a capacity of 5 MW was built in 2019 in the Ulyanovsk Oblast. Today, wind farms are operating in the Rostov, Murmansk, Kaliningrad oblasts, and others. The share of wind in the country's energy balance is less than 1%. The reason is cheap gas and coal. But in 2026, a program to support "green" energy was announced, and wind turbines are multiplying.

Fun with the Wind: Kite, Windsurfing, Paper Airplanes

Wind is not just electricity, but also sports. Kitesurfing: a board with a kite. Windsurfing: a board with a sail. Speed records: 100 km/h. Paragliding and hang gliding use ascending currents. Launching a paper airplane — an ancient Chinese amusement that is popular worldwide on Wind Day. Wind is freedom.

Wind Day: How to Celebrate

Find out if there are wind turbines in your region, go on an excursion. Make a windmill yourself out of paper or plastic. Launch a paper airplane (better on an open field). Watch movies about wind energy ("Wind of Hope", documentary). Participate in the street painting contest "Wind and I". Go windsurfing or kitesurfing (if possible). Just go out into the street, face the wind, and make a wish.

Wind is the future of energy. It is endless, clean, and free (after installation). World Wind Day is an occasion to think: maybe it's time to switch to an alternative? While there's still time.
