March 4, 2012 marks the 80th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Dmitrievich Kosukhin. In 1954, he graduated from the Faculty of International Relations of Kiev State University, in 1967 from the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU and became a candidate of Historical Sciences.
Interest in the scientific research of Eastern countries was manifested in the years of Komsomol work, when, as a responsible employee of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, N. D. Kosukhin was engaged in youth organizations of the republics of Central Asia and Transcaucasia. This factor played an important role in his future life.
At the Academy of Social Sciences, he began studying the national liberation movement on the African continent, where the process of forming nation-states began. He was attracted by the political activities of such African leaders as Gamal Abdel Nasser, Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Marouane Ngouabi and others. They were charismatic romantic revolutionaries. Their ideological and political views became the object of analysis in his doctoral dissertation on " The formation of a revolutionary-democratic ideology in Tropical Africa (countries of socialist orientation)".
Nikolai Dmitrievich Kosukhin made a significant contribution to the study of the genesis and evolution of social thought in African countries, although at first in some works he exaggerated the experience of the impact of scientific socialism on the political views of leaders of countries that declared a socialist alternative. In the future, N. D. Kosukhin comes to the conclusion that at each turn of the historical spiral, theoretical concepts arise aimed at finding the optimal variant of the socio-political structure for these specific conditions. The range of his scientific research is quite significant. His political science studies analyze such fundamental issues and basic characteristics as the socio-economic structure and ethnic segmentation of African society, the specifics of the political process in the search for socio-political renewal, the continent's place in a globalizing world, ideological discourse in political life, the development of democratic procedures in the context of the formation of civil society, and the problem of unity at the continental level. The mentioned problems allow us to reveal the general logic of the political process in African countries and specific forms of its implementation through the dynamics of political changes carried out in the context of the interaction of modern and traditional factors.
For many years, N. D. Kosukhin has been the head of political science research at the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences, actively involved in the development of topical issues of modern political history of African countries, the ideological and political development of African societies, and political modernization.
N. D. Kosukhin published more than 300 scientific works, including individual monographs " East Africa: the struggle against colonialism and its consequences "(Moscow, 1970)," Formation of ideological and political strategy in African countries of socialist orientation "(Moscow, 1980), " Revolutionary Democracy in Africa. Ideology and Politics "(Moscow, 1985, in English), " Africa: the Search for Renewal. Dynamics of political changes in the late XX-early XXI centuries" (Moscow, 2007), as well as textbooks "Modern ideological systems" (Moscow, 1999), "Political Science of the development of African countries" (Moscow, 2009).
N. D. Kosukhin is a co-author and executive editor of collective monographs: "Africa: Multi-variant development "(Moscow, 1997), "Political Parties of Modern Africa" (Moscow, 1999), "Africa: Power and Politics" (Moscow, 2004), etc.
N. D. Kosukhin has repeatedly participated in the study of African realities directly on the continent. In 1971, he headed a Soviet-Somali scientific expedition to study the national liberation movement in Somalia.

For many years, Nikolai Dmitrievich successfully combines research work with teaching practice, being a professor at the Peoples ' Friendship University of Russia, as well as the Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics. He has prepared 40 candidates of historical and political sciences.
N. D. Kosukhin actively participates in various scientific conferences and symposia. In particular, he participated in the third session of the World Congress of the International Association for African Studies (Addis Ababa, 1973), the XI World Congress of the International Association for Political Science (Moscow, 1979), All-Russian Congresses of Political Scientists (Moscow, 2002, 2006) and other scientific meetings and discussions.
His civic and moral position was reflected in scientific and public journals and articles. He is characterized by scientific objectivity, conviction and passion in defending his opinion.
For his active scientific work, he was awarded the Order of Peoples ' Friendship and the diploma of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
