But blues, like any great music, knows no boundaries. Born in the American South, it crossed the ocean and began its triumphant march across Europe. In Western Europe, blues found not just a grateful audience but also a second homeland. Here it was reinterpreted, woven into local traditions, and perhaps it was the European love for blues that saved it from oblivion in the 1960s. How did this happen? Why did blues take such deep root in Britain, Germany, and France? And what new things did it acquire on European soil?First Steps: Jazz Roots and Post-War BoomThe first time American blues reached Europe was with jazz orchestras in the 1910–1920s. However, at that time, it was perceived not as a separate genre but as one of the ingredients of jazz. European music lovers heard blues notes in the music of such groups as Original Dixieland Jass Band, but the true essence remained hidden.The real breakthrough came after World War II. American soldiers stationed in Europe brought with them records of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson.
