Drowning Prevention Day: Why We Should Talk About This

July twenty-fifth. For many, it's just a summer day when you want to swim in a river or the sea. But for the UN and all those involved in water safety, it's a date of special significance. The World Drowning Prevention Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2021. The idea was not born out of nowhere: according to the World Health Organization, more than 236,000 people drown worldwide each year. This is more than the number of victims of some wars. At the same time, 90% of cases occur in countries with low and middle income, and children under five are the most vulnerable group.

Why We Don't Notice This Problem

Drownings are a silent epidemic. They are rarely reported in the news, they don't become scandals. Each death is a tragedy for a family, but not for society as a whole. We are used to thinking that you can drown only through carelessness. But in fact, it is a complex problem related to poverty, lack of infrastructure, lack of education, and even climate change. In some regions, people drown because they have to cross rivers without bridges, because they can't swim, because the water rises due to floods. And this is not an \"accident\" — it is a systemic failure.

Especially vulnerable are children. In Africa and Southeast Asia, children often remain unsupervised near water. They drown in ditches, ponds, rivers. Their parents work in the fields or factories, and they have no opportunity to watch every step. According to UNICEF, over the past ten years, more than 300,000 children have drowned, and most of them were under five years old. This is not statistics, this is lost lives that could have been saved.

How We Can Stop This

Although the problem seems huge, it has a simple solution. The WHO identifies four key measures: installing barriers at water bodies, teaching children to swim, teaching safe rescue and first aid. These measures have proven to be effective. For example, in Bangladesh, where drownings are one of the main causes of child mortality, water kindergartens and swimming programs have been created. Over a few years, the drowning rate among children has decreased by 70%.

It is also important to teach people how to help a drowning person. Many drown because rescuers do not act correctly. Or because there are no lifebuoys. In some countries, even the simple distribution of water condoms (bright floats) reduces the risk. But the most important thing is education. If a child knows that you can't dive into an unknown place, if he can stay afloat, if parents know how to control access to water — this can already save a life.

The WHO recommends including swimming lessons in the school curriculum. It's not just about sports, it's about survival. In Australia, New Zealand, and Scandinavian countries, such programs have been working for decades, and the drowning rate there is significantly lower. However, in poor countries, there are no resources for this. Therefore, international organizations and charitable foundations are developing adaptive programs that can be implemented even with a limited budget. For example, using local materials for teaching, attracting volunteers from among fishermen or local rescuers.

Myths and Truths About Drowning Rescue

There are several myths that hinder effective assistance. The first: \"The drowning person always cries out.\" In fact, most often, the drowning person cannot call for help because he spends all his strength on staying afloat. His movements become chaotic, he cannot wave his arms. Therefore, it is important to monitor the behavior of people in the water, especially children.

The second myth: \"If a person drowns, it's already too late to save him.\" In fact, there is a chance if you pull him out of the water within 5-6 minutes. But it is important to know how to perform artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. And here too, training is needed. Therefore, training in basic rescue is a task not only for rescuers but for the whole society.

The third myth: \"Only those who can't swim drown.\" This is not true. Many strong swimmers drown due to cramps, hypothermia, strong currents, or alcohol intoxication. It is especially dangerous to swim in unfamiliar places where there are underwater currents or cold springs. Alcohol reduces coordination and the ability to assess danger, so it is present in every third water-related death.

What We Can Do Right Now

The World Drowning Prevention Day is not just an occasion for statistics. It is an opportunity for action. We can go to first aid courses. We can teach our children to swim. We can install fences around water bodies if we live nearby. We can support organizations involved in water safety.

We can also stop being indifferent. If we see a person in danger, we should not turn away. We should call for help, throw rescue items, but at the same time, not risk our own lives. And we should talk about the problem so that it no longer remains invisible.

Conclusion: Life Is Worth Saving

July twenty-fifth is the day when we remind ourselves and others: water is not just joy but also danger. It requires respect and attention. Drownings are almost always preventable. And each of us can make a contribution to making the world safer. Because a life saved in the water is a life continued on land. And this life is important.
