ACADEMICIAN S. L. TIKHVINSKY. The January 1987 Plenary Meeting of the CC CPSU and the Science of History

G. A. KOVALEV. Sovinformburo in the Great Patriotic War

Looks at the activity of the Soviet Information Bureau (Sovinformburo) during the Great Patriotic War (1941 - 1945). Discusses the nature of information transmitted by the Bureau, shows that much attention was paid to propaganda abroad, to exposing fascist slander and to highlighting the heroic war effort of the Soviet Union. The author concludes that Sovinformburo made a weighty contribution to the great victory.

M. G. SEDOV. The Study of Dobrolyubov's Heritage in the Past and Today

It is a historiographic survey of the major works about Nikolai Dobrolyubov. Sedov concentrates on the correlation between Dobrolyubov's ideas and the teaching of Chernyshevsky, he offers his own views on how the role of Dobrolyubov in shaping the ideology of revolutionary-democrats was assessed. Much attention is paid to the Soviet works written in the 1930s. Points to the unsolved problems in studying Dobrolyubov's heritage.

Kh. M . VAINU. Finland's Withdrawal from the Second World War

Shows how Finland's foreign-policy course oriented towards anti-Sovietism, underestimation of the Soviet might, reliance on the imperialist states and manoeuvring between the imperialist groupings collapsed in 1943 - 1944. These were the years when the post-war foreign-policy course took shape aimed at good-neighbourly relations with the USSR and meeting the vital needs of the Finnish people.

For decades, debates surrounding Adolf Hitler's death have raged. Even eighty years after the end of World War II, there are those who doubt: did the Führer really kill himself in the Berlin bunker? Perhaps he fled to South America, as did many of his aides? These doubts were largely fueled by the fact that the Soviet Union kept silent for many years about what exactly was found in May 1945 and where the remains of the 20th century's most notorious dictator eventually ended up.

Helium-3 on the Moon

Imagine a substance that costs twenty million dollars per kilogram. It is virtually non-existent on Earth, but scattered across the Moon's surface. It is capable of cooling quantum computers to temperatures near absolute zero, and perhaps, someday, it will become a fuel for clean fusion energy. This is not the plot of a science fiction novel. This is helium-3 — a rare isotope that has today become the focus of a new space race.
