V. I. MARTYNOV. The Solution of the Tasks of Socialist Accumulation in the First Five-Year-Plan Period and the Soviet Working Class

The article traces the history of the introduction of a regime of strict economy and the efforts to tap the available accumulation sources in the first five-year-plan period. The principal source of socialist accumulation at that period was provided by industry. Accumulations in industry were created by the devoted labour effort of the working class and all the other sections of the toiling population, by systematically heightening the productivity of labour and bringing down production costs, by instituting a regime of stringent economy and by strengthening labour discipline. The author shows how the theoretical principles underlying the socialist system of economic management were carried into practical effect in the day-to-day struggle to accomplish the concrete tasks posed by the policy of socialist industrialization.

V. A. KUROYEDOV. The Interrelations of the Soviet State and the Church

The article traces the evolution in the political positions of religious organizations in the U.S.S.R. over the period from the Great October Socialist Revolution to our days, the logical transition of the Church from an attitude of open hostility to the U.S.S.R. to positions of loyalty. The author discloses the fundamental principles underlying the policy of the Soviet state in relation to religion and the Church, showing its role and significance in normalizing relations between the state and the Church.

L. G. ZAKHAROVA. The Attitude of the Nobility to the Government Programme of Abolishing Serfdom in Russia

The article examines the gradual preparations made for the abolition of serfdom in Russia. The author analyzes the government's programme of abolishing serfdom and shows how it was treated by the nobility at one of the most crucial moments in drafting the reform, namely, during the convocation of the Draft Commissions composed of representatives of the nobiliary provincial committees in August- October 1859. The author has drawn extensively on new archive materials and little- known published sources, notably memoirs and epistolary correspondence.

Y. F. IVANOV. The Hussite Movement in Russian Pre-revolutionary Historiography

The keen interest shown in Russia in the Hussite epoch of Czech history was a peculiar response to the national regeneration of the Czech people. The author traces the gradual extension of the scope of research carried on by Russian scientists in the history of the Hussite movement, paying particular attention to the controversial questions which became the subject of heated scientific debates (as, for instance, the question concerning the Orthodox character of the Hussites' religious doctrine). The article notes the interest manifested by many Russian historians of the post-reform period in the social aspects of the Hussite movement. Russian historians, the author writes, accumulated extensive factual material about John Muss and the Hussite movement, drew a number of valuable conclusions and singled out the most important problems to be tackled in future research works.

V. V. MAVRODIN. The Peasant War of 1773 - 1775 in Russia

The article is devoted to the bicentennial of the peasant war of 1773 - 1775 in Russia. Compared with the preceding peasant wars, it was distinguished by the more pronounced polarization of the class forces, elements of organization and more distinct expression of the social aspirations of the insurgents. Although the peasantry constituted the principal motive force of the movement, a conspicuous part in the latter was played by the

Cossacks, miners, metallurgical workers and a sizable segment of working people belonging to the non-Russian nationalities. The rising led by Pugachov, the author writes, left a deep trace in people's minds and in the history of Russian socio-political thought; it was vividly reflected in numerous works produced by prominent writers and poets, playwrights and composers, artists and sculptors. The article emphasizes the immense contribution made by Soviet researchers to tracing the history of the peasant war of 1773 - 1775.

V. V. BOLSHAKOV. Critical Analysis of Zionism in Soviet Historiography

The struggle with Zionism occupies an important place in the all-out war waged by the Communists all over the world against bourgeois ideology. The article sets forth the basic principles of Lenin's appraisal of Zionism. The author subjects to a detailed examination a number of works containing a critical analysis of this reactionary ideology, devoting particular attention to research works published in recent years. The article also indicates the main directions of further research aimed at dissecting the theory and practice of Zionism.

S. M. ASKOLDOVA. The Church and American Trade Unionism at the Turn of the 20th Century

The article is devoted to the ideological rapprochement between the church seeking to "modernize" its programme and American trade unionism which renounced socialist demands and became an instrument for exerting bourgeois influence on the American proletariat. This rapprochement was aimed at achieving coordinated action in the struggle against the socialist movement in the U.S.A. The collaboration of the AFL with the Catholic church and the various Protestant trends was adroitly used by the bourgeoisie when it resorted to the ill-famed New Deal for the sake of salvaging capitalism.
