On May 23, 2011, Patriarch of Russian Arabic Studies Robert Grigoryevich Landa turned 80 years old. The luminaries of science need no introduction. Their achievements are well-known, and any dates are just an occasion to recall "the main biographical facts - books, the most important events-thoughts", in the apt expression of V. O. Klyuchevsky.
Robert Grigorievich, who has been working at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1957, headed the sector in 1985-1989, and in 1989-2005 - the Department of Comparative Theoretical Research, and now holds the position of chief researcher, is the author of twenty-four books and pamphlets and more than four hundred and seventy scientific papers totaling 670 a.l. All his works have attracted and still attract the interested attention of colleagues, as they are always not only scientifically, but also socially significant and focused on the most pressing problems of Oriental studies. Among them are such monographs as " The History of the Algerian Revolution. 1954-1962" (1983), "Managerial personnel and social evolution in Asian and African countries" (1985), " Islam in the History of Russia "(1995), " History of Algeria: XX Century "(1999), " History of Arab countries "(2005), " Political Islam: Preliminary results"(2005), " Sociology of Eastern Countries "(2006; 2008). Many of his works have been published in English, French, German and Arabic.
Robert Grigorievich is the founder of a whole scientific school for studying the Middle East. Under his supervision, two doctoral and twenty-six PhD theses were prepared; he edited such major collective scientific works as" The Social Image of the East "(1999) and" History of the East", vol.V (2006). Robert Grigorievich's lectures at the Moscow State Pedagogical University and the Institute of Oriental Studies (Eastern University) inspired many students to choose the Arab-Muslim world as the subject of their research interests. Robert Grigoryevich seems to know everything about this world. From the diverse influences of the Arab-Spanish civilization of Al-Andalus on the society and culture of North Africa in the Middle Ages and modern times to the evolution of the entire world of Islam, from the influence of the Golden Horde on Russia to the political preferences of Muslims in modern Russia, from the differences between the Arab West and the Arab East to the features of Islam in Southeast Asia and the role of Arabs in its history, to the ambivalent role of modernization, globalization, and westernization in world history...
Robert Grigorievich is a man of the highest culture, an intellectual in the true sense of the word, a knight of truth in the era of total dependence on the Internet. Communication with him is always a discovery of new things, a meeting with genuine wisdom and an unforgettable event in life.
We cordially congratulate Robert Grigoryevich on his birthday and wish him good health, long life and new creative success!
