Great question that touches on one of the key themes of modern warfare. The effectiveness of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system (ATMS) in Ukraine has several dimensions: tactical, psychological, and strategic.

Multi-faceted Analysis of Javelin's Effectiveness in Ukraine

Evaluating the effectiveness of the Javelin in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is not limited to counting the destroyed armor. Its impact has been much deeper, affecting the operational-tactical doctrine of the application of armored forces.

A key advantage of the Javelin, determining its high effectiveness, is the "fire-and-forget" technology. After acquiring the target and launching the missile, the operator can immediately change position to avoid return fire. This dramatically increases the survival rate of the crew compared to systems requiring continuous targeting until the moment of impact (such as the "Fagot" or "Concourse" ATMS).

The second tactical breakthrough was the attack from above. The Javelin strikes the target in its most vulnerable projection—the roof of the turret and hull, where the armor is usually much thinner. This makes the system highly effective against all types of modern Russian tanks, including those equipped with dynamic protection and active protection systems. The ability of the missile to attack from above forces the enemy to seek unconventional methods of protection, such as improvised grating screens ("cellular" superstructures on tank turrets), whose real effectiveness against the powerful cumulative warhead of the Javelin remains questionable.

• Logistics and training. The system requires quality training of operators and complex logistics for the supply of missiles.

The effectiveness of the Javelin in Ukraine has proven that modern precision ATMS are weapons of strategic significance on the battlefield. They do not just destroy equipment but impose their will on the enemy, forcing them to change operational plans and tactical methods. The Javelin has become one of the key factors, along with the bravery of Ukrainian soldiers, that allowed the balance of power to be leveled against a numerically superior opponent in the initial, critical phase of the full-scale invasion.
