Anatoly Vasilyevich Gudymenko, deputy editor - in-chief of the magazine "Vostok (Oriens)", has passed away-a wonderful person, a high-class journalist, one of the brightest representatives of the always small tribe of decent, selfless and selflessly devoted people.

For twenty-three years, he was at the head of the editorial team and in the full sense of the word made the magazine, defined its face, the "philosophy" of the next and subsequent issues, selected materials, took part in their editing, controlled all the stages of its birth - from typesetting to publication. Together with his colleagues at work, he was happy when the number turned out to be successful, and was upset when he found flaws in it.

His approach to the magazine was deeply professional and balanced, he tried to satisfy the interests of all possible readers - historians and economists, political scientists and cultural scientists, indologists and Sinologists, Arabists and Africanists, maintaining a "balance" by era and country, rubrics and genres. Anatoly Vasilyevich worked creatively. No issue of the magazine was similar to the previous one, but together they created the image of one of the best Russian academic journals.

The beginning of Anatoly Vasilyevich's work in the magazine" Vostok (Oriens) " coincided with the memorable period of the so-called perestroika and the collapse of the USSR, when science, together with the whole country, was responsible for

heavy losses. Many young and talented scientists from beskormitsa were forced to leave their research work for the sake of earning money, and some emigrated to the West and stayed there forever. Hard times have also come for scientific publications. The magazine's circulation was falling, and its budget was shrinking. At the cost of incredible efforts and hardships, the editorial team managed to get out of the hole and save the magazine. And the fact that it exists today and is rightfully considered one of the most respected scientific publications is a great and undoubted merit of A.V. Gudymenko.

Anatoly Vasilyevich has always been distinguished by a great life and professional experience, broad erudition, hard work and a strong human will. About this man, it can be said with good reason that he made himself. Before he found himself and his place in life, he had to go a long and difficult way.

A. V. Gudymenko was born in Makeyevka, Donetsk region, in the family of an employee. The war started when he was three years old. As a child, he survived both hunger and the hardships of evacuation. My father died in 1946 from wounds received at the front. Anatoly Vasilyevich began his working life at the age of 18 after graduating from the metallurgical technical school in 1956. He worked as a technician in the construction of the Novosibirsk hydroelectric power station, at the machine-building plant named after him. Kuibyshev in Irkutsk. From December 1957 to July 1960, he was conscripted in the Soviet Army, after which A.V. Gudymenko returned to his native places and joined the work of a locksmith-adjuster in the workshops of the Makeyevugol trust.

In 1961, he entered the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1967, he graduated with a degree in Arabic and English. While studying at the Institute, A.V. Gudymenko completed an internship at the USSR Embassy in Yemen. In 1967-1968, he was a full - time post-graduate student at the Institute of International Labor Movement of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and in 1969-1974, a junior researcher at the Department of Developing Countries of this Institute. His work on the problems of the working class in developing countries was highly informative and analytical. However, in July 1968, he was expelled from graduate school with the right of reinstatement in connection with a secondment to Iraq under the SCEC. A. V. Gudymenko worked in Iraq for a year. This was soon followed by a WTO business trip to Algeria. He never returned to graduate school again.

In 1974, A.V. Gudymenko joined the Department of General Problems of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, but soon moved to the editorial office of the journal "International Economics and International Relations", where he worked first as a scientific editor, and then as head of the Department of Developing Countries. To the editorial office of the magazine " Vostok (Oriens) "(formerly called "Peoples of Asia and Africa") Anatoly Vasilyevich joined in 1988, having already had a solid experience as a journalist-organizer, head of the editorial team.

A. V. Gudymenko was a highly intelligent, tactful and very modest person. Authors who first came to the editorial office could not immediately understand that the main person here is the one who sits in the farthest corner, speaks in the quietest voice and stands up respectfully when they approach. This did not prevent Anatoly Vasilyevich from argumentatively and persistently defending what he considered to be the only right thing. It wasn't easy to shake his conviction. He never complained about his health, about the hardships of life, was reserved, but always ready for a sincere conversation, a friendly conversation.

The editorial staff and authors of the magazine will never forget it and will always remember it with love and gratitude.

Eternal memory to him!
