On February 14, 2013, Senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Historical Sciences Albert Ivanovich Kuprin passed away. Albert Ivanovich was engaged in research on socio-political and cultural problems of North African countries.
A. I. Kuprin was born on November 28, 1941 in the village of Muravlyanka, Sarayevsky district, Ryazan region, to a family of employees. In 1968, he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University. Since 1969, he worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences (later - RAS). In 1975, he defended his PhD thesis on " The expansion of French neo-colonialism in the education and training system of the Maghreb countries (60s)".
In 1980, A. I. Kuprin's monograph "France and the Maghreb Countries: Education and Training" was published. In the 1980s and 1990s, A. I. Kuprin worked in the Department of Scientific Information of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, devoting a lot of effort to studying the world's Oriental centers.
In the last years of his life, Albert Ivanovich worked on such issues as the role of information and telecommunications technologies in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and the human rights movement in Algeria, which became especially relevant in connection with the events of the "Arab Spring". In 2011, two monographs by A. I. Kuprin were published. The first one," Power and Opposition in the Maghreb Countries", considers the process of Islamism formation as a religious and political trend that poses a threat to the democratic development of North African countries.
A. I. Kuprin's latest article on the Arab diaspora in Argentina, published in 2011, is of great interest. It is distinguished by its scientific novelty and originality of development. In addition, in the last year of his life, A. I. Kuprin translated two historical works from English and German, which will be published in the publishing house "Tsentrpoligraf".
He was a talented and hardworking scholar who knew many foreign languages: Arabic, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, etc. Albert Ivanovich was distinguished by exceptional kindness and responsiveness and was always ready to help. The staff of the Institute speak about him with great warmth and respect.
The bright memory of Albert Ivanovich will remain in our hearts for a long time.
