Dinosaurs roamed this vast land, and plants were represented by conifers, ferns, and the first flowering plants. The climate was warm and humid, and life flourished. However, around 140 million years ago, Gondwana began to break apart. Antarctica separated first, followed by Australia. South America and Africa drifted apart about 100 million years ago. From that moment on, their evolutionary paths diverged forever.Isolation and Its ConsequencesAfter the breakup, South America remained an isolated island-continent until about 3 million years ago, when it connected with North America through the Isthmus of Panama. This prolonged isolation led to the development of unique species that no longer exist anywhere else. In Africa, on the other hand, the connection with Eurasia remained, and animals migrated freely between continents.
