Water to the top floor of Burj Khalifa is supplied through a complex multistage system that avoids extreme pressure in the pipes and ensures water delivery to all one hundred sixty-three floors.

Here's how it works:

  • Water Source. Water at Burj Khalifa comes from Dubai's desalination plants, which process seawater into drinking water.
  • Multistage System. Water is not supplied to the top by a single powerful pump — that would be dangerous, as the enormous pressure could burst the pipes. Instead, water is lifted in several stages, transferring from one technical floor to another.
  • Technical Floors with Reservoirs. Throughout the height of the building, there are seven special technical floors equipped with reservoirs for water storage and booster pumps that increase pressure. Technical floors are located, for example, at levels seventeen-eighteen, forty-forty-two, seventy-three-seventy-five, and one hundred fifty-five-one hundred sixty-three.
  • Pump Operation. Pumps lift water to one technical floor. Then the next pump transfers it even higher, to the next technical floor. In this way, water \"is passed from hand to hand\".
  • Use of Gravity. When water reaches the upper reservoirs, it can be distributed to the floors below by gravity, which reduces the load on the pumps.

Burj Khalifa consumes about one million liters of water a day. This amount is comparable to filling an Olympic-sized pool in about two and a half days. Moreover, the skyscraper's air conditioning system collects condensate, which is also reused, contributing to the overall water supply volume.
